It's a good concept, being invaded by alien beings with whom we need to learn to communicate, but it's poorly executed. Think giant octopus, but with 5 legs, and each of the ends of the legs expands into a "hand." The communication is in inky circles, and I'm not sure how we learn to interpret them into our language, but, of course, we do.
The film begins at the end, and the rest of the story goes back to the beginning, so it's really challenging to figure out what the heck is going on. The entire middle part is ... boring. And the beginning and the ending aren't too interesting either.
Arrived is a film I would skip as it's (wait for it) Dead on Arrival at your favorite theater.

Can't disagree more. I loved it. The fact that creatures who see time nonlinearly come to aid us because we aid them in the future is intriguing. The fact that their language becomes a "weapon" by which our own concept of time and space is forever altered so we can see what is ahead is a great twist. The fact that the lead character's perceptions are altered such that she knows the future, can alter the present with that knowledge, but *still makes the same choices, even knowing their ultimate (sad) ending* is really interesting.
The whole movie is a palindrome, as her daughter's name is. She knows the future, so she affects the past so that the future happens. And, someday, humanity will be able to return the favor and help the heptapods with their needs.
I was on the edge of my seat through the whole thing. But, this is why Hollywood makes such diverse movies; you can hate this one while I love it, and you can love the next one while I hate it.
